Walking in the Clouds: An Unforgettable Hike on the Stoos Ridge
Walking in the Clouds: An Unforgettable Hike on the Stoos Ridge

Traveling all the way from the United States to Switzerland is a massive journey, but the moment we stepped out into the crisp alpine air, every mile traveled was instantly worth it. During our trip, we based ourselves in the beautiful city of Lucerne. We had a lot on our itinerary, but one adventure stood out from the rest: the Stoos Ridge Hike.

Even though our mid-July hike ended up being blanketed in fog, it was hands down one of the most breathtaking, memorable experiences of our lives.

The Early Start & The World's Steepest Funicular

We knew we wanted to tackle this trail first thing in the morning. So, we grabbed breakfast and immediately headed out to catch the train. From Lucerne, we took a scenic ride to the Schwyz train station, and from there, hopped on a quick local bus that dropped us right at the valley station for the Stoosbahn. This is where the adventure truly began. To get up to the car-free alpine village of Stoos, we took the Stoosbahn, which holds the record as the steepest funicular railway in the world. It is incredibly vertical—reaching a 110% gradient! The cabins are shaped like giant yellow barrels that cleverly rotate as the train climbs, keeping us perfectly level the entire way up. It was a brilliant piece of engineering and such a fun, unique start to the

Very cool looking from outside

Once in the picturesque village of Stoos, we caught a peaceful ski lift that whisked us all the way up to Klingenstock, the official starting point of the ridge hike.

The Trail Stats

For those planning to do this hike, here is exactly what to expect:
Trail Route: Klingenstock to Fronalpstock
Distance: 4.7 km (2.9 miles)
Elevation Gain/Loss: Around 400 meters (1,312 feet) of undulating climbing and descending across the ridge.
Average Time: About 2 hours, though it took us closer to 3 hours because we stopped to take an extra hour's worth of photos!

A Beautiful, Fog-Swept Ridge When we stepped off the lift at Klingenstock in mid-July, the weather was cool and moody. We only needed light sweaters, which was perfect for the physical effort of the hike. The Stoos Gratwanderung (Ridge Hike) is exactly what it sounds like: a trail carved right along the spine of the mountain. While we both have a mid-range fear of heights, we weren't entirely sure how we would feel on an exposed ridge. Because of the sheer drops, you definitely need to be mindful and pay attention to your footing at all times. However, to our surprise, we didn't feel too scared at all. We think the sheer beauty of the surroundings completely overpowered any fear. The trail itself is incredibly well-maintained. While some parts of the path are wide enough for two people to pass each other comfortably, other sections become a bit narrow. Thankfully, in those steeper and tighter spots, there are sturdy chains and ropes bolted to the rock for you to hold onto for safety. Having those grips made the narrow sections completely manageable as long as we took our time and let others pass safely.

Immersed in the Alpine Atmosphere

The Stoos Ridge trail may not offer high-octane thrill, but it easily earns a spot as one of the most breathtakingly beautiful hikes on our entire itinerary. As heavy fog rolled across the peaks and masked the famous lakes below, the setting turned entirely magical. A gentle mist wrapped the ridge in a quiet, untouched atmosphere, surrounded by vibrant alpine wildflowers clinging to lush green slopes. With the rhythmic, melodic echo of distant cowbells ringing through the valley, it was the absolute quintessential Swiss moment.

The Descent and a Relaxing Return

The hike officially concludes at the summit of Fronalpstock. From there, we simply caught another ski lift for a relaxing, scenic ride back down into Stoos village to begin the journey back to Lucerne. Even though we missed out on the crystal-clear panoramic views, this hike was completely worth the effort. It was a beautiful reminder that nature doesn't have to be picture-perfect to be awe-inspiring. We already know that we will be going back again one day to get another experience when the skies are clear. But until then, the memory of that cool, foggy ridge and the distant cowbells will stay with us for a long time.
